She Look 3 Hair Design

(Safiya, 2012)
In my project proposal I wanted She's hair to be straightened and smoothed back to lift her once shielding veil of hair, freeing her identity to face society as her true, unedited self. I wanted the hair glossy and clean, portraying her new self-love and acceptance. However in this scene the model will be doing quick movements and will be hit by powder paint so I am concerned the hair wouldn't hold its slicked back style and would therefore look messy and unfinished.

When I presented my stylist with She's look 3 I included the image above of soft white curls, representing She's new care-free outlook to life free of discrimination. The hair was deliberately girly and free flowing to complement the ethereal makeup, but contrast with the strong, structured styling. However after discussing styling options with my stylist, Sofia, I have now decided to tie the hair up to showcase the strong neckline of the blazer, instead of covering the detail with voluminous hair.

(URBANDADDY, 2011).
After researching many avant-garde up-dos I decided on the mohawk, a hairstyle originated from the Indian tribe, Mohowauucks. They would shave the sides of their head and leave only a strip of hair down the centre to give themselves an intimidating appearance in preparation for war. This reflects She's determination to fight discrimination to achieve a world free of hate and bullying. Today, in Europe, the mohawk hairstyle is seen as a symbol of rebellion and freedom, mirroring She's confidence to be rebel against society's expectations to unveil her unedited self, achieving the ultimate freedom of self acceptance.

(Shoneye, 2015)

I was inspired by the textured mohawk above, as it developed the original mohawk style into an edgy, modern look. I initially wanted the hair very feminine and relaxed; however after discussing styling options with my stylist I think a stronger, more daring style would be more effective in portraying her new confidence and strength to fight discrimination. All the hair is scraped up and completely off the shoulders, allowing the blazer's extravagant collar to be undisturbed and dominant. I wanted the hair to be structured to complement the structured styling; however the textured plait in the mohawk adds a feminine, more relaxed edge, subtly portraying her purity and innocence. I am concerned my model's hair will not be thick or long enough so I plan to have a meeting with Lottie Davies to discuss my options.

After discussing that the blazer should have a leather aspect with Sofia I decided to mirror this in the hair but weaving strips of leather through the textured plait. This will tie the look together and the leather will add a rebellious, hard edge to portray her new found strength and confidence.
