She Look 2 Makeup Design

The hair is the dominant feature of this look as it's caged design embellishes the face; therefore I want the makeup underneath to only focus on one or two specific areas so those aspects stand out. If I did an intricate makeup design with lots of small details, they would get lost under the hair and end up looking over crowded and messy.

After researching asylum imagery, I noticed their sad, tired eyes made the most impact on me. They expressed their emotion through their eyes even when their faces were numb and lifeless. I found examples where makeup had been used to reflect sadness and depression through the eyes and found the design below from Alexander McQueen's AW12 collection.

(Tommy Beauty Pro, 2013).
This makeup look accentuates the eyes but in an unconventional way, by contouring the inner half of the crease and in the tear ducts. The eye brows have been completely covered, either bleached or concealed with makeup, and then the eye shadow has been blended on top of that and angled downwards to create a sad, drooping eye shape. Usually makeup is used to lift the sides of the eyes to give a flattering cat eye shape; however this is the opposite in accentuating the unflattering areas, making the eyes look more tired and undefined as before. The purple and red tones mirror bruising colours which would be appropriate; however I will be shooting this scene in black and white. A clean ring has been left round the lash line, which again is the opposite to how people do their makeup for a flattering look. This technique not only makes the eyes look slightly swollen and ill, but also gives a rebellious edge. The fact the eye brows are bleached out gives an alien-like, inhuman look which mirrors her feeling of not being normal; the absence of eye brows also makes her look unwell as their structure is lost, creating an unnatural bare space. The cheek bones have been sculpted with a grey tones to give a natural sunken in look, highlighting her lack of nutrition.

(Howstodo, 2016).
I want the lips to blend in with the model's skin to reflect how patients can feel their voice and opinions become irrelevant and ignored by the controlling asylum staff. This mirrors how She feels like her opinions don't count in society, almost as if she's lost the function to speak. This subtle lip will accentuate the eyes, drawing attention to the sad stories they have to tell. I considered giving her bitten, bloody lips to represent the constant stress and frustration with being controlled and isolated; however I want the main focus to be the eyes as they pier through the suffocating hair.

(Rawsthorn, 2007).
I want to keep a constant aspect throughout all the makeup looks to tie them all together and remind the audience that these are all the emotions of the same girl. After being influenced by the image above, by Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen, for She's first look I decided to continue to blank out one eye in all her looks. Even though the styling, setting and emotions change around her, the blind eye portrays that the negative effects of discrimination are permanent and will always lie under the surface, affecting victims for the rest of their lives.
