Meeting with Lottie to Discuss Challenging Designs

I deliberately chose some hair and makeup designs that would challenge me as I want to show case my skills in my fashion film and push the creative boundaries of hair and makeup. My dark fashion film is avant-garde themed so I want to evoke emotion and force viewers out of their comfort zone from the styling and beauty concepts.

Hair Design 1
(Wade, 2015).
Original Hair Chart

Updated Hair Chart

I want to incorporate this hair design in She's Look 2, with the caged hair trapping She's identity. Lottie suggested starting from the outside and doing waterfall plaits going inwards, leaving the centre plait last. She said to be very careful and neat when sectioning the hair as this could get confusing and cause the hair design to look messy. She noticed I had designed each french plait to start from the crown of the head and come forwards to the hair line; however she said I should stick to five plaits instead of seven to give cleaner lines and leave more room for a clear cage shape. I mentioned my model's hair was thin so fewer plaits would make sure each plait wasn't too thin and would lend enough hair for the continued caged effect. Lottie said I should keep the top three french plaits the same, but make the two bottom french plaits into one on either side and make them go downwards so that the waterfall plaits go in the correct direction; I have made another hair chart to show these changes.

For the spear going down the centre plait Lottie said it to use a metal blade I would have to secure it with a head piece or headband which would be visible and possibly look messy. So she suggested I used card of foam with silver shiny spray to give a metallic look, but with light weight plastic. She said I could then glue hair grips to the back of the card/foam to slide onto the plaited hair. The model in my inspiration image has hidden her hair by wearing a neck accessory; however I am hoping my model's hair will be short enough to be able to smooth the ends of her hair to her neck with hair gel. I will experiment with this and talk to my stylist if I need to!

Hair Design 2
(Shoneye, 2015).

I was concerned how I would get the volume in this hair style as my model has quite thin hair. Lottie suggested I bought fake hair, the same colour as her own, for padding to give the model a fuller look. It looks like the hair has been scraped up by sections into a high ponytail, which has then been plaited and pulled apart, and then folder over itself in an S shape to give a mohawk design. Lottie said I could connect the fake ponytail to the real ponytail to secure the hair piece in place. She said this would be very time efficient as you could do the hair preparation before the shoot. To get the excess hair at the front, Lottie suggested I took a section from the model's real hair at the front, back comb it in the desired shape and then place the hair piece on top to blend them together.

I mentioned I wanted to incorporate white leather into the plait, so she suggested a five strand plait, with two strands leather strips, to blend the leather in seamlessly. Lottie suggested I looked on Amazon or a shop called Trend Setters for my hair piece and said it didn't have to be expensive and could be synthetic as no heat is being applied.

Makeup Design
(Knight, 2017.)

Lottie agreed using cotton buds would be an effective basis for the mouthpiece as it fits perfectly in the mouth, distorting the outer edges, and it is mouth safe, with no sharp edges or dangerous materials. Lottie suggested I fitted the crossed cotton buds in an X shape into the mouth and then paper mached them together to keep them in place. I am concerned the paper mache would go soft when put inside the mouth so this is definitely worth experimenting with. Lottie then said to wrap the paper mache in a smooth material and then spray it with a silver food spray to give it a metallic finish.

I am meeting with Lottie this Friday in the makeup studio to practice and experiment with these hair designs. The materials I need to buy for this meeting are:
- Blonde hair extensions
- White faux leather
- Card/foam
- Silver spray
