After researching asylum stories and the patient's appearances I decided to focus on the feeling of frustration, depression and self-hate to create She's second look. I want to also portray social ostracism as the patients are banished from society to live within cold, concrete walls; this mirrors how She has admitted herself to a mental asylum as she feels she doesn't belong in society as she is different. I want the hair to be the dominant aspect to contrast with the previous look, where the makeup is the main focus.

(Wade, 2015). |
This avant-garde image is from a collection called 'Ethereal' by photographer Kirsty Stroma Bain, makeup artist Molly Jane Sheridan and hair stylist Anna Wade. The restraining hair style is reminiscent of a cage, as if the model's identity and self worth has been trapped by society's limited expectations. Hairstylist Anna Wade says "Inspired by aristocracy, this story focused on the boundaries which we create for ourselves, using hair to define those limits". This description mirrors how She has created this asylum in her subconscious and she has locked herself inside, isolating herself from society, representing her feeling of unworthiness and hatred. This scene represents She's frustration and anger towards her treatment by the asylum staff, mirroring society, so the full design will reflect that trapped, hopeless feeling.
The plaited hair design look intricate and adds texture, merging hair styling with art. The connected plaits could either be an attached hair piece connected to the French plaits or the head would have been plaited with strands of hair left out each time. This hair design would be very time consuming, so I will talk to Lottie to work out the most efficient option.

(Gailet, 2012). |
The image above is from Christophe Gaillet's Collection P/E 2012 and this beautiful, expressive hair design inspired my use of a headpiece to shape the hair. It looks like the model's hair was coloured matched with the fake hair on the headpiece to give the illusion her hair is expanding and twisting into a contorted state. My design will represent the restricting asylum walls, mirroring She's social boundaries; this use of a headpiece has expanded my design possibilities to create something more three dimensional and extravagant.
Hair Chart
I am confident with my plaiting ability; however I still want to practise to make sure they look as tight and neat as possible. I am concerned my model won't have enough hair to create the caged shape; I will have a meeting with Lottie to discuss my options if this is the case. This hair design will be time consuming so I will make sure I leave enough time on the day of the shoot to complete it so I don't delaying the shoot. I am excited to practise this design as I think it will challenge my ability and create an intricate, detailed design.
