Sebastiane and Amber said they thought I was perfectly on track with where I should be, as I have completed all my designs and done test shoots etc. I felt proud of myself and relieved that they thought I was on track as I had worked hard to stick to my production schedule. However Sebastiane said my presentation was more of a production report because I didn't introduce my project or explain what it was about. This is because I misunderstood and thought it was a follow on presentation from the one I did a couple of weeks ago, where I had explained in depth my concept.
Sebastiane said he was concerned the use of powder paint was too obvious and cliche. He said he saw students use coloured paint as a form of liberation many times and so it wasn't unique or exciting anymore. He had mentioned he was concerned with this previously; however this time he strongly suggested I found an alternative way to express this emotion. My original inspiration for this explosion of colour was Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama because she paints bright and colourful patterns as a form of escape and to understand and express her thought and feelings. I developed this creative outlet into powder paint; however I will look into different possibilities to represent She's feeling of liberation and freedom. Sebastiane said he didn't think much thought had gone into my decision to use powder paint as it was such an obvious choice, which made me determined to come up with an avant-garde idea to express She's emotions.
Amber said she liked that my educational video was very unique because it wasn't going to tell the viewer what to think, but instead evoke a genuine emotion from them by showing them the effects of discrimination in an expressive and avant-garde way, giving them an experience to enjoy and learn from. Amber also said she liked how I hadn't made the discrimination specific as then many viewers would be able to relate to it.
Sebastiane was concerned that the concept I was trying to portray was not going to be portrayed without my explanation; however I deliberately made it ambiguous to encourage the viewer to make different interpretations and relate it to themselves. He said the actresses' performance and movement is key in portraying the emotion and message to the viewer, to convey the anti-discrimination concept. I will make sure this point is taken on board by discussing the emotion behind each scene with my models in depth to make sure they understand and can portray the emotion believably.
Amber was unsure of my link between the concept and the fashion; however after I explained that the fashion emphasised She's emotional stages of dealing with discrimination, she said she was intrigued to see the end result. After seeing images of the styling I had done with Sofia, Sebastiane said I needed to be careful to not over shadow the film's emotion by using too dominant costumes, as he wanted to feel the concept without being too distracted by the styling. I understood what he meant; however the styling won't be too over powering as the focus will be on the model's movement and expression and the dark lighting will stop the styling from making too much of an aggressive statement.
After I mentioned I was collaborating with a music guy, Sebastiane warned me to not make the music too dominant as it would steal the focus away from the emotion. He said that people in the music industry want to make the music the main aspect, but that I need to be the designer to make sure music is created that I want. I unfortunately couldn't play the music I had worked on with Dan because it didn't work on the PDF file, but I am confident I worked closely with Dan to create some tracks I can incorporate to enhance my film.
