After my midway feedback it was clear that I had to find an alternative to using powder paint. I researched many ideas; however I always found myself reverting to using paint. I realised that I found it easier and more inspiring looking for movement and settings to express the negative emotions of discrimination compared to the feeling of happiness and freedom. I found it more difficult to avoid the cliche when exploring ways to express her liberation, possibly because people visualise it in similar ways as opposed to very specific negative emotions.
I felt I had been so organised and on schedule throughout my project so I felt panicked when I had to change the scene I was filming in just over a week. I still wanted to include the contemporary dance style I had researched previously as it is not restricting and will allow the dancer to express her freeing emotions liberally with relaxed fluidity.

Sebastiane suggested I looked at Donna Huanca, a nomadic Bolivian-American artist who uses references from time, origins and memories to create avant-garde sculptures, installations and performances. Huanca says, “I want the experience of my work to create a surreal moment similar to a hallucination,” which mirrors the visual experience I want to produce, but with an underlining message to raise awareness for discrimination (American, 2017). The images above show stills from her Poly Strene Braces performance where the naked female models immerse their bodies in painted abstract art. A clear sheet of plastic is incorporated into the performance for the models to layer their bodies with experimental art to introduce alternative shapes to distort the body. I will experiment with my dancer using her expressive, contemporary body movements to translate onto the sheets of clear perspex as abstract art.
Sebastiane and I agreed that my dancer using coloured paint to express her freedom was cliche so I decided to use beauty products to reflect that She no longer feels the need to conform to society or be restrained by its expectations, and is freeing herself from the norm of beauty products to achieve society's 'perfect' look. I incorporated these products with movement and abstract art as a way of expressing her enjoyment of her new found liberation.
I will experiment with these new ideas in a test shoot where I will incorporate mood lighting to see if the ideas come together to create my vision and to see what needs to be improved.
